Chelsi Smith was born in California. After the divorce of her parents, she lived with her grandparents in Texas. Just before participating in beauty contests, she studied at San Jacinto College. In 1994, as Miss South East Texas USA, she took part in the Miss Texas USA competition, where she reached the group of semi-finalists. A year later she was awarded the titles Miss Galveston County USA and Miss Texas USA. In both competitions she also won special awards – Miss Congeniality. Keep in mind that Smith was the first black woman to win the Texas state competition!
In February 1995 as Miss Texas, she took part in the most popular American beauty contest – Miss USA. She came out sensational – winning each stage of the competition reached for the crown and the title of the most beautiful American and again – Miss Congeniality award.
In May 1995, at the age of 22, Chelsi Smith flew to Namibia to compete for the title of Miss Universe 1995. This contest also won. She became the sixth American and the second black woman in the Miss Universe crown!
Chelsi Smith died on September 8. She lost the fight against cancer.
